Calera Wines Take Two Top Spots in Wine
& Spirits
Comprehensive Tasting of 467 American
Pinot Noirs
HOLLISTER, Calif., April
16 /PRNewswire/ -- Calera Wine Company,
a noted producer of Pinot Noirs, placed
two of its wines in the "Top 11"
out of 467 wines tasted by Wine &
Spirits Magazine during 2006. Results
of this comprehensive tasting of American
Pinot Noirs were published in the April
issue of the magazine.
Receiving the highest 94 point score was
the 2003 Calera Mt. Harlan Selleck Vineyard.
The 2003 Calera Mt. Harlan Jensen Vineyard
was awarded 93 points by the editors of
the New York-based publication.
Calera was the only winery to place two
wines in the "Top 11."
Calera Wine Company was founded by Josh
Jensen over 30 years ago. The distinctive
vineyards are located near the top of
a massive limestone mountain, Mt. Harlan,
near Hollister, California, a two and
a half hours drive south of San Francisco
in San Benito County. Limestone
soil is a key factor in producing the
fine wines of Burgundy. The very
cool climate vineyards are at a high elevation,
averaging 2200 feet, and receive little
rainfall.
As a result, the average yields of the
vineyards are less than 2 tons per acre
that contribute to the special qualities
of Calera's Pinot Noirs. In addition
to the Selleck and Jensen vineyards, Calera
makes three other vineyard designated
Pinot Noir wines: Mills, Reed and Ryan,
a Mt. Harlan Chardonnay and Viognier and
two great value wines, a Central Coast
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.The Selleck
and Jensen vineyards both were planted
in 1975.
